Botanical Name: Zea maiz

Nutrient-rich gluten-free flour

Also referred as Blue Corn, our organic non-GMO product is botanically very simillar to the common yellow table corn but with higher content of minerals and vitamins. It is rich in cell protecting antioxidants, as well as containing anti-inflammatory properties. Purple corn has been used in the Inca empire in Peru as a food staple and food colorant for drinks, such as the fermented beverage called “Chicha morada”. 

Purple Corn has a higher antioxidant capacity than blueberries with anti-inflamatory abilibities promoting tissue regeneration. Studies indicate Purple Corn may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, inhibit abnormal cell growth, promote collagen formation and improve circulation. This makes it an excellent option for Gluten-free nutrition baking. Use Purple Corn wherever you would use regular corn flour, corn meal, or as a substitute for other flours. It can be used in raw chocolates, breads, tortillas, pancackes, muffins and cakes.

Medicinal properties
Rich in Anthocyanins, (derived from the Greek ‘anthos’ meaning flower and ‘kyanos’meaning blue), anthocyanins are responsible for the purple/red/violet color of this plant.
Anthocyanins are part of a bigger group of plant chemicals called “flavonoids”. Research has shown that the purple corn content of anthocyanins is comparable to blueberries. It has also shown the same or greater anti-free-radical properties than blueberries (Vaccinium corymbosum).
The most abundant anthocyanin in Purple Corn called “C3G” has been researched recently, as it has significant antioxidant activity. Its ability to inhibit oxidation in fat cells induced by UVB is many times greater than vitamin E, therefore a great protector of cell oxidation.

Anti-inflammatory properties
The anti-inflammatory properties of C3G contained in the pigments of this plant will also suppress the inflammatory response present in diseases marked with inflammation.

Antioxidant properties
The Anthocyanins also have shown ability to aid in the prevention of colorectal problems. Also, a condition called atherosclerosis (hardening and narrowing of the arteries) created by the oxidation of fats or lipids can also be helped with the antioxidant properties of purple corn. This plant also has shown abilities to reduce levels of total cholesterol.

purple corn powder and chicha morada

Harvesting consist of the Purple Corn cobs being picked when they are entireley ripe.

The grains are then separated from the cob, dried at a low temperature and milled into a fine powder.

Purple corn powder can be used as a flour in gluten-free baking and also as an ingredient to prepare a purple beverage called "chicha morada"

Great for baking gluten-free

Have made some purple crepes that taste great. So happy to know that it contains antioxidants and I can have in my gluten-free diet.

Is Purple Corn Powder same as Purple Corn Flour?

Yes, It is the same. Basically it is the ground grains of the corn. You can use as you would use normal corn flour in baking.


Why is Purple Corn Powder special?

It is gluten-free and additionally it has more nutrients than standard corn, incluidng antioxidants and natural antiinflamatory properties.
